GREEN POWER TECHNOLOGIES CASE STUDY

LARGE TELECOM PROVIDER - A REMOTE CELL TOWER SITE SOLUTION

Renewable Hybrid Solution for Remote Telecommunication Tower Site

A leading telecommunications company in South Africa

Specification

Scope of Work

Green Power Technologies (GPT) have been contracted by a leading telecommunications company to deploy a hybrid renewable energy system, as of proof-of-concept, at a key telecommunications tower in Mpumalanga. This rural area experienced prevalent power outages due to government implemented load reduction measures aimed at protecting South Africa’s strained electrical infrastructure. The region’s unreliable grid, coupled with a high risk of theft and vandalism of critical equipment, presented significant operational challenges.

GPT designed and delivered The Power Box 2.0, a customised hybrid energy solution that integrated solar power, battery storage, and diesel backup generation into a secure and reliable system. The completed installation featured a 50kVA Sunsynk 3-phase inverter, a 61.2kWh LiFePO4 battery storage system, a 32kVA Baudoin diesel generator, and a 15 x 550Wp solar PV array. The system was engineered to reduce the site’s reliance on diesel fuel while maintaining uninterrupted power for telecommunication equipment during prevalent outages.

To address the security factors, GPT implemented enhanced protective measures, including reinforced structural elements, a PIR alarm system, magnetic lockable doors, pepper spray deployment, and a high-decibel Brain Buster siren to deter intrusions. Additionally, remote monitoring capabilities via Deep Sea Controller and Web-based interfacing allowed for real-time system management from offsite locations.

PROJECT GOALS

Energy Reliability

SUMMARY

Green Power Technologies completed the deployment of a bespoke hybrid solar energy solution for a large telecommunications provider’s remote cell tower site, Mpumalanga. The system, branded as The Power Box, combined renewable solar energy with battery storage and diesel backup generation to ensure reliable energy supply in a region heavily impacted by grid instability. Advanced security measures were implemented to deter any attempt of theft and vandalism, while remote monitoring allowed for offsite system oversight. The solution significantly reduced operational costs and improved sustainability. The Power Box is currently operational and undergoing its proof-of-concept phase, providing a large telecommunications provider with a resilient energy solution tailored to meet their specific needs.
